Just one year ago, on December 3, 2022, South Korean soccer fans will never forget. That’s because it was the day the ‘Bentoho’ faced Portugal in the third match of Group H at the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.
South Korea won the match 2-1 with goals from Kim Young-kwon and Hwang Hee-chan.
With the win, South Korea improved to 1-1-1 (0 goals conceded, 4 goals scored, 4 goals allowed). Uruguay improved to 1-1-1 (0 G, 2 L) with a 2-0 win over Ghana. South Korea dramatically finished second in the group on goal difference and advanced to the round of 16.
In the fifth minute of the first half, South Korea conceded an early goal to Ricardo Horta. But soon after, in the 27th minute, Kim Young-kwon capitalized on a defensive mistake by Cristiano Ronaldo on a corner kick to level the score at 1-1.
In the second half, South Korea struggled to create chances. Despite consistently passing the ball to Son Heung-min, he was repeatedly denied by Portugal’s intense defense.
South Korea introduced Hwang “Bull” Hee-chan in the 21st minute of the second half. Hwang received a pass from Son Heung-min after a solo dribble in second-half stoppage time and split the Portuguese goal with an accurate and fiery shot. It was a dramatic goal.
Despite six minutes of stoppage time, the game ended with a 2-1 victory for South Korea thanks to Hwang’s goal.
Hwang Hee-chan, who scored the winning goal, spoke to reporters after the match against Portugal and said, “I wanted to help the team because I couldn’t play in the first and second rounds, so I’m very happy that I was able to help them a little bit,” as they advanced to the round of 16.
Hwang Hee-chan thanked Son Heung-min for his pass, saying, “I thought there was really only one way to pass, but (Son) gave it to my brother right there, so it was easy for me to finish.”
Meanwhile, South Korea, who reached the round of 16 in dramatic fashion, faced Brazil in the round of 16 on Dec. 6, 2022. South Korea lost 1-4, ending their World Cup journey.
