Noah Syndergaard has been designated for assignment by the Cleveland Indians.
Syndergaard started the 2023 Major League Baseball game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Monday (Aug. 28), allowing five runs on four hits, three home runs, three walks and three strikeouts in six innings.
It was the last time Syndergaard would play in a Cleveland uniform. Cleveland placed Syndergaard on waivers. “Syndergaard’s contract with Cleveland was terminated early when the club designated him for assignment,” MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, reported.
Syndergaard came to Cleveland from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline. He struggled to stay on track. He struggled mightily, posting a 5.40 ERA in six games. He didn’t do much for Cleveland, going 1-2 during that stretch.
When Cleveland acquired Syndergaard, they were hopeful that he would be able to fill in as a starter. They expected him to fill the void left by injuries to Cy Young Award winners Shane Beaver, Tristan McKenzie, and Carl Quintrill.
If Syndergaard’s resume is any indication, the resurgence was inevitable. After making his big league debut with the New York Mets in 2015, Syndergaard took the league by storm with a fastball that reached 102 mph (164 km/h). With a 9-7 record, Syndergaard had a successful rookie season. The following year, in 2016, he went 14-9 with a 2.60 ERA and established himself as the Mets’ ace. He was even nicknamed “Thor” for pitching with his blonde locks.
However, Syndergaard’s time in the spotlight would be short-lived. In 2020, he underwent Tommy John surgery to repair his elbow ligaments and began a downward spiral. The decline in velocity was pronounced. It dropped into the mid-90s. Having lost his advantage, Syndergaard never regained his form and parted ways with the Mets after the 2021 season.
After joining the Los Angeles Angels, Syndergaard showed signs of resurgence. He seemed to be free of the injuries that had been plaguing him. After being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, Syndergaard proved to be healthy enough to make the postseason. Syndergaard finished the 2022 season with a 10-10 record and a 3.94 ERA.
Syndergaard changed teams again in the offseason. His next stop was the Dodgers, a “rebuilding factory,” where he hoped to bounce back. But he struggled and struggled, and was eventually traded to Cleveland, only to be designated for assignment.
Syndergaard’s record this season is 2-6 with a 6.50 ERA. For a pitcher in his prime, that’s an abysmal stat line. MLB.com also criticized Syndergaard’s struggles, saying, “He’s struggled to find his velocity, a far cry from his Mets days when he was nicknamed ‘Thor.카지노사이트
Cleveland was hoping for a Syndergaard resurgence, but they couldn’t wait any longer. According to MLB.com, “Cleveland also tried to help Syndergaard find consistency. They tried to focus on his athleticism, but he hit 10 home runs in five August starts. With the American League Central race heating up, the time to wait seems short.”
If no team picks up Syndergaard’s contract after he is placed on waivers, he could be optioned to the minors or become a free agent and sign with a new team.
