U-18 Women’s National Softball Team defeats Hong Kong for first Asia Cup win

The South Korea National Under-18 (U-18) Women’s Softball Team earned its first win at the 2023 U-18 Women’s Softball Asia Cup.

South Korea won its second preliminary round game against Hong Kong 12-3 in five innings on Tuesday in Pingtan, China.

After falling to China 0-10 the previous day (Sept. 29), the Koreans recorded their first win of the tournament and moved into a tie with the Philippines (1-1). China leads the way with two wins.

In addition to pitcher Koo Ye-jin, South Korea’s starting lineup was Kim Ji-yoon (center field), Yoo Ju-ah (second base), Kim Ye-eun (shortstop), Lee Seo-yoon (catcher), Nam Hee-ji (designated hitter), Song Min-ju (third base), Seo Dae-in (left field), and Um Soo-min (right field).

From the beginning of the game, Korea pushed Hong Kong hard. After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, South Korea scored four runs in the bottom of the inning on six hits, including two doubles and two triples. The Korean bats adjusted to the Hong Kong pitcher’s pitches perfectly, adding two runs in the second, two runs in the third, and four runs in the fourth to put the game away.

Korean starter Koo Ye-jin was pulled after the first inning after struggling with her control and giving up one run. Park Na-rim and Song Ji-in then took the mound and gave up one run apiece, but the Koreans were able to hold on for the win.안전놀이터

With the big win against Hong Kong, Korea will play their final game of the preliminary round against the Philippines at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 31. A win against the Philippines will qualify them for the Super Round of the tournament.

“We lost to China yesterday, but I think the players gained confidence in their batting with the big win against Hong Kong,” said Jang Jae-ho after the game. “We will continue this momentum and definitely win the third game of the preliminary round tomorrow against the Philippines to advance to the final round.”
