According to ESPN, “City became the first English club to break the 400 million pound ($648.4 million) payroll mark last season. City spent a total of £422.9 million ($685.5 million) last season, an increase of £69 million ($111.8 million) from the previous year.”

City completed the club’s first-ever “treble” last season. They won the EPL and FA Cup, as well as the club’s first-ever UEFA Champions League (UCL) title. It was hailed as the strongest team in the world. The players also earned the highest salaries.

The monster Holland, who broke the EPL single-season scoring record with 36 goals last season and was top scorer in the UCL with 12 goals, earned a reported £45 million ($73 billion).

The outlet added: “City won the treble last season, and the squad bonuses that came with it boosted the salaries of the entire squad. Holland’s £45 million salary also contributed to City’s sharp rise in wages.”

City’s local rivals, Manchester United, reported a payroll of £331.4 million ($537.2 billion) last season, leaving a large gap between them and City.

“The 2022-23 season was the greatest year in City’s history, a season that expanded our heights and set new standards,” said City chairman Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak.

City’s brand value is also the highest in the world at £1.51 billion ($2.448 trillion). It’s the first time an English club has topped the list since 2018. Real Madrid came in second with €1.46 billion ($2.368 billion), while Manchester United was fourth with £1.36 billion ($2.046 billion).
